Climate

South Africa has southern hemisphere seasons. Midsummer is December / January and midwinter is June / July. December is the long summer school holidays and Cape Town in particular is extremely popular with locals on holiday.

What to Bring

In the South African Summer, lightweight clothing is the norm. In the winter a jacket, jumper or coat may be needed, particularly in the evenings. While some establishments require jacket and tie, or cocktail dresses for the evening, most stipulate “smart casual” – a collard-shirt and slacks or a blouse and skirt.

At game reserves, neutral colours such as browns, beiges, and khakis are preferred on game drives. Pack a sweater; it can be chilly in the early morning and after dusk. Wear a hat to avoid sun-stroke and don’t forget the swimsuits for sitting round the pool during the day.

Tipping / Service Charges

It is customary to tip waiting staff 10% in restaurants. Other people who usually receive tips are taxi drivers, bar tenders, guides, hotel porters, petrol and pump attendants, hotel maids and the ranger and tracker teams on safari.
